Jane battled through some Glaswegian snow recently to attend a course on General Osteopathic Technique, otherwise known as Total Body Adjustment. It is a technique, or routine, that she learnt during her time at the ESO, and still uses in practice today. Given it has been nearly ten years since she graduated, Jane appreciated a refresher on the technique and theory, as well as catching up with her old lecturer Anna Reeve. Jane says that it a really beneficial technique because it is quite a well rounded, assessing and treating the whole body, including the lymphatic system, and is really gentle, so is great for everyone, especially her more elderly patients. You can even adapt it for pregnant women who prefer to lay on their side. She really enjoyed the course, less so the commute to Glasgow in the snow.
Jane wanted to remind all patients who experience pain as a result of arthritis that the Versus Arthritis and Arthritis Action websites are a great source of information. They have some fabulous exercises to help with keeping arthritic joints moving and strong, which is hopefully helpful at this time of year when we are all indoors a bit more avoiding the cold and damp weather, and also when we are more inclined to form some new habits. Some of the exercise routines are a little lengthy, but a top tip is to split them up over two days, if the full set seems a bit overwhelming.
